Environmental Philosophy

FURUNO created the world's first practical fish finder. Today, our operations encompass R&D, manufacturing, sales and services related to maritime electronics products as well as industrial electronic products. As we conduct all of these business activities, we recognize that caring for the environment is one of the most important issues shared by all humanity. Based on this recognition, we conduct environmental protection activities at our business sites. And based on a corporate theme of endeavoring to create environmentally friendly products for the 21st century, we aim to conduct business activities that are environmentally responsible, thereby contributing to society.

*1 RoHS: Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment The RoHS Directive came into force in the EU in July 2006. It bans the sale within the EU of electrical and electronic equipment containing six specified substances: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE), designated bromine-based flame retardants. Moves are also afoot in countries outside the EU to regulate the use of these substances.

While FURUNO's products presently fall outside the scope of the RoHS Directive, we have proceeded with development activities that restrict the use of these specified chemical substances in new models since August 2005, with the exception of certain models.

Helping to Prevent Global Warming

[FY2010 target] (Targets for 4 groups of electrical and electronic devices)
25% improvement compared with fiscal 1990 in emissions per real production unit*2 by fiscal 2010

*1 Emissions per production unit (t-CO2 / billion yen) = CO2 emissions (t-CO2) / production (billion yen)
*2 Emissions per real production unit (t-CO2 / billion yen) = CO2 emissions (t-CO2) / (production (billion yen) / Bank of Japan's domestic corporate goods price Index: Electrical equipment sector)

Promoting Industrial Waste Recycling
Waste per production unit (t / billion yen) = Industrial waste (t) / Production (billion yen)
